Danny,
I have to say I am not entirely surprised. My employer has used easyspace/IOMart/internetters for years (until late last year). Following on from your post I can also report that I had a very similar experience with them only 2 weeks ago.
They were used as a domain registrar, and as primary NS record holders for several domains both internal, and for many of our clients. When they decided to just wipe several zone files from their NS hosts they not only wiped our clients public facing services from the “great big bad web” but also that of my employer.
Now whilst due to my careful planning, my employer did not suffer an entire loss of service, but some of our clients did. I too tried to contact them through email, calls, and opening tickets. But to no avail. They were no where to be found. Very annoying.
Unlike Danny I could not just drive the 500+ miles to ther office to see if they were there, but I have no doubt they would not have been.
I have already started the process of moving all the domains registered with them to an alternate provider. Who we now pay a sizeable fee to ensure we have absolutely no repeats of any such problems again.
Danny I feel your pain.
In fact I still have problems, getting them to unlock the domains to transfer them has proven nigh on impossible. Stating several excuses such as, your reverse DNS records dont appear to be correct, neither do your SPF records. Yes you absolute shower of cretins they won’t, be as you deleted the zone files.
I have no doubts my letter of complaint will fall on nothing but deaf ears.
If you see them, or worse still use them. Run, as fast as you can. Run.
