Where to go?

The wife and I have two weeks leave coming our way, and at the moment we have no definitive plans.  We unfortunately booked the first two weeks of the school summer holidays in the UK, and as a result there are very few last minute deals about.

So we may have to sta at home, or worse pay over the odds for a rather generic break.

Any suggestions where can take ourselves? We’re not beach lovers, or hotel pool hogs, so 2 weeks in Majorca probably wont be top of our list.  We have been looking at a break in Croatia, and perhaps another Eastern Block country, to pick up a bit of atmosphere.

My wife and I took an extended road trip around Europe in ’05. We really enjoyed Ljubljana in Slovenia: my wife is an architect and really likes the early 20th century secessionist and art nouveau architecture that is pervasive throughout the city. Slovenia in general is very nice (and I can get you a Citroen mechanic with great improvisational skills if you need one). We also enjoyed southern Poland: we visited both Krakow and Wroclaw on the same trip. There was free Wi-Fi on the medieval market square in Wroclaw. Of course we had to stop in Auschwitz since we were right there and it was exactly as haunting and impressive as you’d expect it to be, only more so. However, it was still a very fun trip.
